Hātea Art Precinct

Overview

Hātea Art Precinct is Whangārei’s newest art and cultural destination made up of Whangārei Art Museum, Hundertwasser Art Centre and Wairau Māori Art Gallery.

The Hundertwasser Art Centre is a unique architectural project dedicated to artist, visionary and ecological activist, Friedensreich Hundertwasser placed in Whangarei.

The Wairau Māori Art Gallery is the first dedicated public Māori art gallery in Aotearoa. It joins a select group of public indigenous art galleries internationally. The name ‘Wairau’ is Te Reo Māori for One Hundred Waters, just as Hundertwasser means One Hundred Waters in the German language.
